PETITION AGAINST CLOSURE OF WALKER’S PLANTS LAUNCHED
"DON'T WALK OUT ON KILLIE"
Kilmarnock Football Club's Park Hotel hosted the launch of a petition to save the Johnnie Walker whisky plants in Kilmarnock and Hurlford from potential closure, with the loss of 700 jobs.
The petition was launched by Willie Coffey, the local MSP, and Michael Johnston, Chairman of Kilmarnock Football Club.
Trades Union representative Billy Paterson attended to lend support.
It can be signed at the Park Hotel, or online though http://www.gopetition.co.uk/
The huge turnout included cross-party representation from Des Browne MP, Kenneth Gibson MSP, John Scott MSP, East Ayrshire Depute Provost John Campbell, Depute Council Leader Councillor Iain Linton and elected members of all the parties represented on East Ayrshire Council.
Speaking after the launch, Kilmarnock MSP Willie Coffey said:
"On Wednesday morning, when I heard the closure announcement, my feelings were a mixture of disbelief, anger and heartbreak.
"But it is heartening now to see the community, the political parties and the trade unions all united behind the campaign to save Walkers.
"Killie FC have done us proud today by providing the platform to launch this campaign. The efforts of Michael Johnston and his staff have been absolutely magnificent.
"The famous striding man, born in 1820, is so important to our town that it has become almost a symbol of who we are.
"We will work tirelessly to persuade Diageo to stay in the town, to stick with us, and our efforts are focussed on that.
"I have been swamped by messages of support for the campaign. Even before a petition was launched, people were asking how to sign up and support.
"In the weeks ahead, it is vital that we keep up the pressure and work together to persuade Diageo to reverse this decision.
"The support we get from everybody who loves Johnnie Walkers and wants it to stay in Kilmarnock and Hurlford will be vital in helping us through the campaign.
"Well done Killie today. You were there for us when we needed you!
