HEARTLAND BY-ELECTIONS SHOW LABOUR MELTDOWN.

HEARTLAND BY-ELECTIONS SHOW LABOUR MELTDOWN.

SNP ENJOY 7% SWING FROM LABOUR FROM 2007 HIGH.

LABOUR CLING ON BY 63 IN SAFEST WESTMINSTER SEAT IN SCOTLAND.

The SNP have hailed the combined results of yesterday’s by-elections held in Labour heartland seats where the party enjoyed a combined 7% swing from the Labour party from the SNP’s high watermark in May 2007, and a swing from Labour to the SNP in all three wards. The difference in elections is that only one councillor per ward was being elected in the by-elections, compared to the multi-members who were elected in these wards in May 2007.

In particular, in the Coatbridge North and Glenboig by-election in North Lanarkshire Labour only clung on by 63 votes in a ward which lies in what should be Labour's safest Westminster seat of Coatbridge, Chryston and Bellshill.

Commenting on the combined results SNP MSP and Minister for Parliament Bruce Crawford said:

"As we await the European results, these results are very positive indeed for the SNP – alongside the latest YouGov poll showing the SNP with an 8% lead over Labour.

"To secure a 7% swing from Labour from what was already a high watermark for the SNP in 2007 is enormously encouraging. And for Labour to see their vote collapse to a level where they cling on by only 63 votes in a seat like Coatbridge – in their safest Westminster constituency in Scotland – is nothing short of remarkable.

“With the possibility of a General Election increasing as Gordon Brown's authority disintegrates before our eyes, these results put the SNP in a strong position.

"The people of Scotland want a Government which puts jobs and communities at the top of its agenda - not one which still has plans to slash Scottish investment in the teeth of a recession.”
