SCOTTISH OPPOSITION PARTY SPLITS ON CALMAN – DIVISION AND DISARRAY.

SCOTTISH OPPOSITION PARTY SPLITS ON CALMAN – DIVISION AND DISARRAY.

Commenting on a debate on the Calman Commission proposals in the Scottish Parliament SNP MSP Linda Fabiani said the debate had exposed the report’s true colours and the divisions between the unionist parties.

She also condemned the attitude of the opposition parties, with the Conservatives branding the report “by unionists for unionists”, ignoring the role of the people of Scotland.

Speaking after the debate Ms Fabiani said; “Far from a united front it appears the Calman coalition has fallen apart at the first hurdle.

“This morning’s debate exposed the division and disarray amongst the unionist parties over Scotland’s future.

“Do they want the powers in Calman’s recommendations or do they want to kick them into the long grass? “The only point they all agree on is excluding the people of Scotland from vital decisions over their future.

“From today’s debate it is clear the unionist steering group is simply a means of putting off decisions and hiding their failure to devolve further powers.

“In contrast the SNP is willing to implement the powers we agree with Calman on straight away to make our streets safer with controls over air guns and drink driving legislation.

“It is the people of Scotland that gave us a Scottish Parliament and it is they who should determine fundamental changes to its powers.

“That is why Scotland’s people are at the heart of the SNP Government’s National Conversation and why the SNP will ensure Scotland’s people have the opportunity in a referendum to vote for Scottish independence.
