SNP WESTMINSTER LEADER COMMENTS ON SPEAKER ELECTION.

SNP WESTMINSTER LEADER COMMENTS ON SPEAKER ELECTION.

Commenting on the election of John Bercow as Speaker of the House of Commons this evening (Monday) SNP Westminster leader Angus Robertson MP said:

“The SNP offer our congratulations and constructive support to the new Speaker.

“The election of a new Speaker comes at a crucial juncture for the Westminster system and John Bercow will have his work cut out in getting the House in order, and restoring public trust in parliament.

“Westminster has been mired in the expenses scandal, and that mess does not magically disappear because we have a different Speaker - the new Speaker has the opportunity and responsibility to bring about reform, and he must do that as rapidly as possible.

“Over recent weeks the SNP has made the case for moving the Commons towards Scottish Parliament standards of transparency, and I hope that Speaker Bercow will build on the efforts by his predecessor to include minority parties in the effort to reform and restore trust in parliament.”
