EXTRA APPRENTICES ADD TO JOBS BOOST

EXTRA APPRENTICES ADD TO JOBS BOOST

SNP MSP Christina McKelvie today welcomed an announcement by the Scottish Government of funding for additional apprenticeships in the retail industry.

The announcement follows news at the weekend that Sainsbury are to create over 1000 jobs in Scotland and ASDA’s recent announcement of 3500 new jobs across the country.

Ms McKelvie, a member of Holyrood's Education Committee said:

“Today’s apprenticeship places are particularly welcome following recent announcements by Sainsbury and Asda that they plan to increase employment in Scotland.

“Too often retail skills are looked down on, but the retail trade is a valuable part of our economy and can offer strong career opportunities to many of our young people.

“This investment and the support of industry for training Scotland’s apprentices shows that together we’ve got what it takes to recover strongly from the recession with a workforce well prepared for the future.

“With the Scottish Government increasing investment in apprentices we are seeing resources and training places targeted at parts of our economy that can offer a real future for young people with £6 million supporting 1,000 apprentices in Glasgow as part of the Commonwealth Games legacy, 50 extra apprentices in the Creative Sector, funding for 100 apprenticeships for Home Energy and Efficiency and the 2 for 1 package for Life science apprentices focusing training on a key growth industry.”
