NELSON MANDELA BACKS SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT ON MEGRAHI RELEASE.

NELSON MANDELA BACKS SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT ON MEGRAHI RELEASE.

Commenting on the report in the Sunday Post which reveals that former South African President, Nelson Mandela, supports the decision of the Scottish Justice Secretary to release Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi on compassionate grounds, the SNP Westminster leader and Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Angus Robertson MP, said:

"This is an extremely welcome intervention, which indicates the extent of international support for the Justice Secretary's decision.
"Nelson Mandela had personal involvement in the case, having persuaded the Libyan authorities to hand al-Megrahi and his co-accused over for trial.

"The fact is that many people from across the parties, the legal fraternity, churches, civic Scotland and throughout the world have endorsed Kenny MacAskill's difficult decision to send al-Megrahi back to Libya to die. “Nelson Mandela’s views demonstrate that there is a great deal of international respect and support for what was a humanitarian decision by the Justice Secretary."
