LESS THAN 2 YEARS TO GO AND LABOUR POLICY CUPBOARD REMAINS BARE.

LESS THAN 2 YEARS TO GO AND LABOUR POLICY CUPBOARD REMAINS BARE.

GRAY CHALLENGED TO EXPLAIN WHY HE PREFERS KNEW JERK NEGATIVITY TO DEVELOPING POLICY.

With less than two years to the next Scottish Parliament elections, the Labour leader in the Scottish Parliament has been challenged to explain why his party has failed to produce a single policy since he became leader, and has instead become embroiled in knee jerk negativity which backfires in the media – and in elections. Iain Gray had appointed Margaret Curran as his shadow cabinet member for developing policy along with a number of advisors, but she stood down in March – and since then there has been no indication of any policy from the Scottish Labour Party. In a week when the Labour leader was once again embarrassed after his complaints about the First Minister were thrown out by former Presiding Officers, and an absurd attack on the Scottish Government’s Cabinet meeting in Glasgow next month entirely disproved, SNP MSP Kenny Gibson said: “We are now well into the second half of this parliament, and it is extraordinary that Iain Gray hasn‘t announced one single policy. Instead, we have a constant litany of knee jerk negativity which backfires both in the media and in elections. “This week we saw their vexatious complaint about First Minister’s Questions come back to haunt them, a ridiculous attack on the Scottish Government’s Glasgow Cabinet meeting totally disproved, and their justice spokesperson come under magisterial attack from Tam Dalyell. “Labour failed the test of government and were flung out in 2007 – with less than two years until the next Holyrood election, they are clearly failing the test of opposition because they have no policies or ideas of their own, and are faring accordingly at the ballot box. “That no replacement has been selected to fill Margaret Curran 's former role as policy co-ordinator is highly revealing. Scaremongering, smears, misleading statements, and opposition for the sake of it is no alternative to policy, and is clearly impressing no-one. Indeed, Richard Baker’s approach has even been attacked by one of his own MSPs! "Under Iain Gray, Labour either have no policies or can't agree on a policy. Their policy on the unfair Council Tax is to keep the Council Tax, and Mr Gray has already ripped up their 2007 manifesto. "In short, the Labour policy cupboard is bare. “And as we have seen with their finances, it is not only the policy cupboard which is bare under Iain Gray. "Labour are crumbling across the UK, have lost control of Scotland, and their constant knee jerk negativity looks like desperation. "The reality is that people like what they are getting from the SNP – in local communities and across Scotland. That is why the SNP were successful and won the recent European election, topping the poll in 22 of Scotland’s 32 local authority areas, compared to Labour’s three. “The SNP’s investment in Scotland’s economy, in our skills sector, and our commitment to fight for Scotland’s jobs in these tough times is what people want, and our ever growing levels of support both locally and nationally reflect the SNP’s strong record of delivery.”
