UK TORTURE CLAIMS MUST FACE INQUIRY.

UK TORTURE CLAIMS MUST FACE INQUIRY,

An inquiry into allegations of UK Government involvement in torture overseas is the only way to restore full confidence in UK actions abroad. SNP Defence Spokesman and the SNP's leader at Westminster Angus Robertson MP called on the UK Government to accept the need for an inquiry to resolve lingering concerns over UK activity in recent years. His comments follow a joint response from David Miliband and Alan Johnson to allegations of UK involvement in torture. Mr Roberston said; "Too many questions remain unanswered. It is all very well for the UK Government to say it is opposed to the use of torture but it is actions not words that will speak the loudest. "With two parliamentary committess raising concerns and new reports emerging on an almost weekly basis the Government has no excuse but to call an inquiry and answer these serious concerns. "Our Defence and Security services do an excellent job and rather than work under a cloud of suspicion the allegations of illegal activity, rendition and torture over recent years should be properly investigated and an inquiry held."
