SNP LEAD CALLS FOR GENERAL ELECTION AT PMQs.
Angus SNP MP Mike Weir today (Wednesday) led calls at Prime Minister’s Questions for Gordon Brown to call a General Election in the wake of the deepening Cabinet crisis and the ongoing expenses scandal which is engulfing Westminster.
The SNP and Plaid Cymru have confirmed that they will use debating time allotted to them to force a dissolution debate next Wednesday (10 June). The move, if it was successful, would give the public the chance to pass judgment on politicians and the UK Parliament.
Speaking after the exchange, Mr Weir said:
“The Home Secretary has gone, the Communities Secretary has gone, but the real question is when will the Prime Minister go – when will he go to the country and allow the people to cast their verdict over the shambles that this Prime Minister is presiding over.
“Gordon Brown cannot command authority over his own Cabinet colleagues let alone the confidence of the country.
“In the wake of the deepening Cabinet crisis and the ongoing expenses scandal there can be no argument against the entire House of Commons submitting itself to a vote of the people.
“People are crying out for a General Election not a reshuffle.
“Next week the SNP and Plaid Cymru will give Parliament the chance to give the people their say. All the opposition parties are backing the SNP and Plaid dissolution motion, and it is now for Labour MPs to get behind this and let the people have their say.”
