ENERGY METER SCHEME MUST BE ROLLED OUT ‘WITHOUT DELAY’

ENERGY METER SCHEME MUST BE ROLLED OUT ‘WITHOUT DELAY’

WEIR GIVES CAUTIOUS WELCOME TO SMART METER ANNOUNCEMENT

SNP Energy Spokesperson Mike Weir MP has cautiously welcomed UK Government proposals to install energy meters across the UK but warned that the roll out must be swift to maximise the economic and financial benefits.

Commenting, Mr Weir said:

“For both financial and economic reasons, people must understand how much energy they are using. The smart meter scheme proposed by the UK Government offers an opportunity to do that and as such is welcome. However, action to tackle climate change is needed now and there must be no delay in rolling out this scheme across the country.

“Eradicating fuel poverty and tackling climate change are both urgent priorities of the SNP Government who have brought forward a number of initiatives to boost fuel efficiency including the £60 million Energy Assistance Package.

“The SNP is leading the world with its ambitious climate change legislation and the Labour Government must act speedily to follow its example. The clock’s ticking on climate change and there’s no time to waste to ensure the best result for the environment and the best result for the nation’s fuel poor.”
