PM BROWN MUST APPEAR BEFORE IRAQ INQUIRY.

PM BROWN MUST APPEAR BEFORE IRAQ INQUIRY.

SNP Westminster Leader and Defence Spokesperson Angus Robertson MP has said that the case for Gordon Brown to appear before the Chilcot Inquiry is now ‘undeniable’ after a leading Foreign Office official hit out at the Treasury for withholding funds for the reconstruction of Iraq.

Dominic Asquith, who was the director for Iraq at the Foreign Office from 2004 before becoming ambassador to Baghdad during 2006, spoke of his frustrations over the Treasury’s reticence to provide adequate resources to the region.

Mr Asquith said: “The direction was that this was a high priority but we weren't being given the extra resources to deliver.”

Commenting, Mr Robertson said:

“Instead of hearing from officials who were following orders, it is becoming increasingly urgent that we hear from the politicians who led us into the biggest foreign policy disaster in modern times.

“Tony Blair, the man who took the UK to war based on a lie, is to appear before the committee. The case for Gordon Brown, the man who signed the cheques, to appear alongside him is now undeniable.”
