UK GOVERNMENT CANNOT SHIRK SHARE OF RESPONSIBILITY FOR COPENHAGEN COP OUT

UK GOVERNMENT CANNOT SHIRK SHARE OF RESPONSIBILITY FOR COPENHAGEN COP OUT

PM GOES FROM PRAISING DEAL TO ATTACKING OTHER COUNTRIES WITHIN 48 HOURS

Mike Weir MP, SNP's Westminster Energy Spokesperson and a member of the Westminster Energy and Climate Change select committee, has hit out at the UK Government’s refusal to accept any share of the responsibility for the failure to make progress in Copenhagen.

Commenting, Mr Weir said:

“In just 48 hours, the Prime Minister and his Climate Change Secretary have gone from proclaiming Copenhagen to be a great success to blaming other countries for it being a failure.

“The inconvenient truth is that the UN negotiations faltered because of a lack of political leadership and, try as the Prime Minister might, the UK Government cannot shirk its share of responsibility.

“As well as lacking ambitious enough targets at home – less ambitious than those of the Scottish Government – UK Ministers failed to work hard enough to unite Europe and consequently we got warm words but no concrete action.

“Instead of venting on YouTube, the Prime Minister should be looking to COP 16 and working towards a binding agreement in Mexico next year – before it’s too late.”
