West of Scotland MSP Gil Paterson today welcomed the announcement by Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon of a public inquiry into incidences of c.difficile at the Vale of Leven hospital.
The inquiry follows Ms Sturgeon's earlier commitments that an inquiry would be considered when police inquiries reached a conclusion.
Mr Paterson said;
"I welcome, and I know those involved in the cases of c.difficile at Vale of Leven will also welcome, this speedy move to a public inquiry.
"Alongside the efforts of the Police and Crown Office a Public Inquiry will help those families affected and NHS employees at Vale of Leven discover the events behind this appalling outbreak.
"The Scottish Government has taken significant action on hospital acquired infections and is making progress in addressing the problem of c.difficile in our hospitals.
"With more support, investment and staff resources going into tackling hospital infections than ever before there is a clear commitment from the SNP to ensure our hospitals are clean and safe.
"Today's inquiry will allow the lessons from Vale of Leven to be learnt across the NHS and help with the process of improving infection control in our hospitals.
"Nicola Sturgeon's announcement last week that 600 further cleaners will be recruited by the NHS is only the latest in a series of measures demonstrating the seriousness with which the SNP takes the issue of hospital acquired infection."
