SNP RENEWABLES INVESTMENT CONTRASTED WITH LABOUR NUCLEAR BLANK CHEQUE.

MILIBAND CONTEMPT FOR SCOTTISH DEMOCRACY

As UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband delivers a nuclear sales pitch on a visit to Hunterston, SNP Westminster Energy spokesperson Mike Weir MP has contrasted the Scottish Government’s investment in renewables energy with Labours nuclear blank cheque.
Mr Weir said:

“Ed Miliband is not fooling anyone with his nuclear sales pitch, and he should recognise and respect the position of the Scottish Government, and indeed that a majority in the Scottish Parliament also reject new nuclear developments.

“The Scottish Government are investing in Scotland’s renewable energy potential, while Labour wants to write a nuclear blank cheque.

“The facts speak for themselves - since May 2007 the Scottish Government has determined 26 energy applications, including consenting 20 renewables projects, totalling over 1.5 GW. That is one a month, and more than during the previous 4 years of the Labour/Liberal administration put together.

“The Scottish Government has already announced plans to take advantage of these unique strengths by creating 16,000 green energy related jobs in Scotland over the next decade.

“Scotland is capable of meeting our energy needs through renewables and new technologies, and the here and now investment by the SNP Government is in stark contrast with Labour’s if, when, dim and distant nuclear proposals.

"The costs associated with developing new nuclear stations are mammoth, and the costs and risks associated with disposal are incalculable. There is nothing sustainable about nuclear.

"Thank goodness we have an SNP Government in Scotland that will not allow any new nuclear stations on our soil."
