SNP WELCOME PRESIDENT OBAMA'S COMMITMENT TO NUCLEAR FREE WORLD.

As the President Obama calls for international nuclear disarmament in Prague, the SNP suggested this was the ideal opportunity to scrap costly plans for an unwanted replacement for Trident. Commenting, SNP Westminster Leader and Defence Spokesman Angus Robertson MP said: "I welcome the President Obama's moves towards a world free from nuclear weapons. "The Prime Minister indicated last month that the UK Government will consider reducing its nuclear arsenal but only as part of wider negotiations. This is the ideal opportunity. "In recent weeks, both the dubious safety record and the total chaos over nuclear procurement have totally discredited the UK's nuclear deterrent. "The UK Government must listen to Scotland. The Scottish people oppose nuclear weapons as do the Scottish Parliament and the Scottish Government. "The time is right to get rid of Trident."
