CHILCOT MUST QUIZ POLITICIANS NOT JUST POLICY ADVISORS

CHILCOT MUST QUIZ POLITICIANS NOT JUST POLICY ADVISORS

PUBLIC WANT THE TRUTH BEHIND “SOFA GOVERNMENT’S” ILLEGAL INVASION

As Tony Blair's ex-chief of staff Jonathan Powell sits before the Chilcot Inquiry today (Monday), SNP Westminster Leader and Foreign Affairs spokesman, Angus Robertson MP, has demanded Prime Minister Gordon Brown give evidence before the General Election.

His call comes as a YouGov poll for the Sunday Times showed 52% of people believed Blair deliberately misled the country over the war and 23% thought he should be tried as a war criminal. The poll also revealed 49% of people believed Campbell did not tell the truth about the Iraq war at the time and was still not telling the truth.

Commenting, Mr Robertson said:

“Aides and advisors can offer background but only those who took the decisions which led to the worst policy disaster in modern times, can give us the truth.

Powell may have defended this "sofa government" but the British public will not be so forgiving.

“According to this weekend’s damning poll, over half of people believe Tony Blair deliberately misled the country over the war and 23% think he should be tried as a war criminal. This is a shocking revelation showing how the country really regards the ex-Prime Minister.

“Even more concerning is that half of those surveyed believe Campbell was still lying before the enquiry last week. The public are not satisfied that the evidence given so far gets to the bottom of what really happened in the run up to the war.

“As the man who bankrolled the illegal invasion, Gordon Brown must give evidence alongside Tony Blair. The public deserve to know the full facts behind this illegitimate war before they go to the polls in the General Election.”
