DEMOCRATIC HEALTH BOARDS IN SCOTLAND MOVE STEP CLOSER.

DEMOCRATIC HEALTH BOARDS IN SCOTLAND MOVE STEP CLOSER.

Members of the public should be given the chance to stand for election to health boards after Parliament unanimously backed proposals from Nicola Sturgeon for direct elections to health boards.

SNP MSP for Lothians and Former GP Dr Ian Mckee welcomed today’s vote as a step forward for the NHS and for local democracy.

Speaking after the debate Dr McKee said;

“Recent cases of health boards proposing to close local services have demonstrated just how much health services mean to communities across Scotland.

“Elections to health boards will bring a new level of democratic accountability to the NHS.

“The NHS is responsible for a major portion of public spending and is of concern to everyone in Scotland. The decision to allow votes at 16 in health board elections reflects the importance of health care to all.

“Today’s vote is an endorsement for the principle of democracy and accountability in local healthcare. I hope when this bill is passed we will see current health boards looking forward to welcoming new members and eager to participate in pilot projects.”
