LABOUR PARTY MUST CHANGE SCOTTISH BROADCASTING IDEAS.

SNP Broadcasting spokesperson, Pete Wishart MP, has welcomed plans by the Scotland Secretary to host a Broadcast Summit in Scotland, but warned the Minister that Labour must adopt a more constructive approach from their response to the Scottish Broadcasting Commission (SBC).

Mr Wishart pointed out that, with the SBC's report accepted by the Scottish Parliament, it must now form a fundamental part of the proposed summit and the UK Government's consideration of Ofcom’s recommendations.

Mr Wishart said:

”Ofcom’s report on public sector broadcasting raises serious issues, and therefore a serious summit to address these is a welcome idea, but it must not be used by Labour as a narrow political platform.

"Labour's response to the Broadcasting Commission was grudging in the extreme and served more to alienate broadcasters than to engage with them.

"Labour’s argument that Scotland should not have a Scottish six, that we should continue to have news and current affairs services that are irrelevant and at times misleading, along with Labour’s personal attacks on broadcast journalists, was not a clever or considered contribution to the debate.

”It is bizarre that Jim Murphy has made no mention of the Scottish Broadcasting Commission as being a key stakeholder in any future event .

"The objectives of the Scottish Broadcasting Commission have been widely welcomed right across Scotland including by the Scottish Parliament and no summit on Scotland's broadcasting future would be legitimate without their presence.”
