SURGE IN SUPPORT FOR SNP IN EUROPE

VOTERS TAKING NOTICE OF SNP STANDING UP FOR SCOTLAND

SNP MEP Alyn Smith has welcomed a YouGov survey which put the SNP at 35% for the upcoming European election. This represents at 15.3% increase in support for the Scottish National Party since the 2004 European elections.

The YouGov poll also pegged Labour at 35% with the Tories and the Liberal Democrats on 11 and 12% respectively.

Commenting, Mr Smith said:

“This is the first indication of the likely outcome of the European elections, and this massive surge in support shows that voters have real faith in the SNP as a party who stand up for Scotland.

“In Government in Scotland, it is the SNP which is doing everything within its power by delivering a six-point economic recovery plan to help families and business in these troubled economic times.

“We've put more money back in people's pockets with a council tax freeze and lowering prescription charges; and we've put more money back into high street businesses with our small business bonus.

“In Europe, the SNP is standing up for Scotland and getting results. In fisheries, where London Labour has marginalised Scottish interests for years, SNP Minister Richard Lochhead recently secured record breaking cod quotas and safeguarded the future of prawn fishermen on the West Coast. And the Scottish Government’s commitment to renewable energy is also attracting significant levels of support.

“Today’s poll shows voters are taking notice.“SNP membership has risen by 60% since the last European elections. With this enthusiasm and a strong track record in both Edinburgh and Brussels, the SNP is on track for further success in Europe in 2009.

“We are looking forward to the European elections in June and are aiming to top the poll for the first time.”
