ICELANDIC PM HITS BACK AT LABOUR’S INTERNATIONAL INSULTS.

ICELANDIC PM HITS BACK AT LABOUR’S INTERNATIONAL INSULTS.

SNP Westminster leader Angus Robertson MP has held up remarks by the Icelandic prime minister stating that Iceland, as a small independent nation, was inherently well placed to recover from the global financial crisis.

Iceland’s Prime Minister, Geir Haarde, also used an interview with BBC Scotland to hit back at Labour critics who used the collapse of banks in Iceland to promote an anti-independence stance.

Mr Robertson said:
“I welcome Geir Haarde’s intervention. The idea that the economic crisis is an argument against small countries was always completely misplaced.
“It was a sign of desperation that the first priority of some politicians, during what is a global financial crisis affecting nations large and small, is to talk down Scotland's abilities and potential, and in the process insult our international neighbours.
”The reality is that the more levers of economic power a nation has, the better able it is to respond to both difficulties and opportunities. Would that Scotland had the same economic levers available to it as our small independent neighbours do.”
