PRIME MINISTER GORDON BROWN MUST FACE OBAMA’S NO NUCLEAR FUTURE.
SNP MSP and anti-nuclear campaigner Bill Kidd today called on Gordon Brown to drop proposals to build new nuclear weapons.
Mr Kidd’s comments come as Gordon Brown attempts to tie himself to President Obama’s coat tails.
President Obama has made clear he will not develop any new nuclear weapons and the White House Foreign Policy Statement commits the USA to taking steps toward eliminating weapons and reducing stockpiles of nuclear weapons.
The policy statement commits Obama and Vice President Biden to “take several steps down the long road toward eliminating nuclear weapons. They will stop the development of new nuclear weapons;” (http://www.whitehouse.gov/
The Scottish Parliament and Scottish Government is opposed the building of new nuclear weapons and the presence of nuclear weapons at Faslane on the Clyde.
Glasgow MSP Bill Kidd said;
“Nuclear weapons are an anachronism. We do not need new nuclear weapons in the UK, never mind just outside Glasgow.
“Gordon Brown is keen to jump on Obama’s coat tails. The one policy he should adopt is to bring an end to nuclear proliferation and stop the development of new nuclear weapons.
“At a time when Labour are looking to enforce spending cuts on Scotland – spending billions on a nuclear weapons system we neither want or need is an absolute disgrace.
“If Gordon Brown learns one thing from his trip to America and his idolisation of Barack Obama – let it be that his dream of new nuclear weapons is dead.”
