SAFETY FAILINGS ON CLYDE MUST BE ADDRESSED.
West of Scotland MSP Stuart McMillan has voiced support for the widows of three men who lost their lives when the Flying Phantom tugboat sank in 2007 on the River Clyde.
Despite a Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) report in 2008 concluding that a fog detection system be put in place as soon as possible to avoid further tragedies nothing has been done.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has said it does not have powers of improvement or prohibition with regard to port operational safety and the Health and Safety Executive has said it does not have jurisdiction in these matters.
Commenting Mr. McMillan said:
“Last year I welcomed the MAIB report. Not only for the answers it gave to the families of those involved, but also for the recommendations it made to Clydeport to prevent such an accident in the future.
“That no action has been taken by Clydeport to ensure this kind of tragedy does not happen again is quite unacceptable. It is equally disturbing that agencies responsible for maritime safety and health & safety at work appear to have no powers in this matter.
“This is an appalling state to have our leading Scottish port be in. Last year, I hosted an event in the Parliament which was attended by River Clyde Pilots in order to highlight to Parliamentarians their role and the importance of safety on the river.

"It is very clear that safety issues on the river must be considered with the utmost importance and as such Clydeport should live up to their responsibilities.
"An accident like this should not be allowed to happen again and I will be pressing for the recommendations of the MAIB report to be put in place as soon as possible.”
