PRIME MINISTER GORDON BROWN SHOULD LEAD BY EXAMPLE SCRAP TRIDENT.

‘TIME IS RIGHT’ TO GET RID OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS ON CLYDE

As the Prime Minister Gordon Brown calls for international nuclear disarmament during a speech in London, the SNP suggested the UK Government could lead by example and remove nuclear weapons from the Clyde.

Speaking today (Tuesday), the Prime Minister indicated that the UK Government will consider reducing its nuclear arsenal but only as part of wider negotiations.

Mr Brown’s call came just one month after SNP Westminster Leader and Defence spokesman Angus Robertson MP opened a conference in Edinburgh saying “the time was right” to get rid of nuclear weapons in Scotland.

Commenting, Mr Robertson said:

“I welcome the Prime Minister’s call for a world free from nuclear weapons.

“Of course, Gordon Brown could lead by example by scrapping the Trident nuclear weapons system and hyper-expensive plans for its replacement.

“The UK Government must listen to Scotland. The Scottish people oppose nuclear weapons as do the Scottish Parliament and the Scottish Government.

“The time is right to get rid of Trident.”
