EDINBURGH TO HOST KEY UK BODY

EDINBURGH TO HOST KEY UK BODY
LABOUR BLOCK ON EDINBURGH OVERTURNED
SNP MSP Dr Ian McKee has today welcomed the news that the British - Irish Council is to be based in Edinburgh.
Last November plans to base the council's secretariat in Edinburgh were blocked by the former Labour Government.
The decision to base the Council in Edinburgh was taken today at a meeting of the British Irish Council in Guernsey.
Lothians MSP Dr McKee said:
"This is good news for Edinburgh and brings a prestigious organisation to the capital.
"Labour's efforts to block the Council being based in Scotland were ridiculous.  They put their prejudices against the SNP Government before the good of Edinburgh and of inter-governmental relations.
"Edinburgh and Scotland are perfectly placed to co-ordinate between the nations of the British Irish Council.
"There are huge economic opportunities for Scotland, working with the other nations and islands of the British Irish Council and now there are huge opportunities for Edinburgh as the centre of inter-governmental relations."
