HOLYROOD SENDS WESTMINSTER STRONG MESSAGE ON TUITION FEES

HOLYROOD SENDS WESTMINSTER STRONG MESSAGE ON TUITION FEES

The Scottish Parliament tonight voted against proposals to increase tuition fees in England.

In a strong message to the Browne review and the new Westminster Government the Parliament supported the SNP Government’s opposition to the fees which could have a negative impact on Scottish education.

SNP MSP Christina McKelvie, who spoke in the debate said:

“Scotland’s view is clear – tuition fees are wrong and we will not support them.

“Lifting the cap on fees in England could have serious effects on higher education in Scotland. If the new UK Government is real about it’s respect agenda then it must listen to the views of the Scottish Parliament and show that respect to Scotland’s students and universities.

“This also sends a message to those Scottish Lib Dem MPs who despite signing the NUS pledge to support students appear to be changing their position at the behest of their new Conservative colleagues.

“Lib Dem MSPs must hold their colleagues to account and ensure that those who said they would back Scotland’s students do back Scotland’s students.
