SNP COMMENT ON GAZA AID SHIP

SNP COMMENT ON GAZA AID SHIP

CONCERN FOR SCOTS ON BOARD AID SHIP

Responding to the interception of an aid ship bound for Gaza by Israeli
forces which according to reports has left more than 10 people dead and to
the news that there are atleast three Scots on the ship SNP MSP for Govan
and Scotland’s Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said:

"I wish to express my deep sadness at the news of the loss of life upon
the peace flotilla headed towards Gaza.

"My primary concern is for the safety of the Scots that are on board. The
Israeli Government must provide immediate reassurance of their current
situation and wellbeing.

"This use of violence against a humanitarian convoy carrying medicine and
other aid is being rightly condemned across the world and demonstrates the
increasing need for Israel to lift the blockade.

"The blockade of Gaza is causing untold suffering to ordinary Palestinians
who want to go about their everyday lives in peace and must be brought to
an end.

Glasgow MSP Sandra White, who was contacted by a passenger on the boat
early this morning said:

"I received a call this morning at around 5am from one of the passengers
on the boat, in obvious distress, as it was being attacked and then our
connection was lost.

"I still do not know the fate of that passenger. The fact that these
attacks were perpetrated in International waters in contravention of
established international maritime laws makes them indefensible"

"The UK Government has a duty to protect the rights of its citizens and
the Foreign Secretary must explain what steps the UK will be taking after
today's tragic events

"Our message must be clear and concise, the Israeli Government must abide
by international laws and resolutions to ensure that needless suffering is
ended and that real peace can begin"
