SHOCKING ALCOHOL RELATED CRIME STATISTICS - ALCOHOL IMPACT ON POLICE REVEALED

SHOCKING ALCOHOL RELATED CRIME STATITSTICS - ALCOHOL IMPACT ON POLICE REVEALED

GRAMPIAN POLICE TIME TAKEN UP WITH OVER 1000 ALCOHOL INCIDENTS

Figures from Grampian Police show that they recorded nearly 1200 incidents in or around licensed premises in Aberdeen in 2008 / 09.

SNP MSP Brian Adam today said the amount of police time spent on alcohol related incidents added to the need to change our relationship with alcohol.

The figures cover serious and minor assaults, rape, breach of the peace, refusal to leave licensed premises and robbery amongst others.

Bars and clubs in Aberdeen City Centre recorded a higher number of incidents than those in other parts of the city.

Commenting on the figures Aberdeen North MSP Brian Adam said:

“These figures from Grampian Police show how much police time and effort is spent dealing with activities relating to alcohol and why we must tackle our alcohol culture.

“In one year over 1000 incidents were recorded by Grampian police in or around licensed premises in Aberdeen. That includes 630 minor assaults and over 1 serious assault a week. Add to that over 400 cases of breach of the peace and shockingly 6 cases of rape and it is clear that the over consumption of alcohol is responsible for a large amount of crime in our communities and disorder on our city streets.

“The high numbers of incidents in and around Union St demonstrate the problem police have to tackle in the city centre.

“New licensing changes will mean an end to cut price deals in pubs and clubs but as increasing numbers of people drink at home before hitting the city centre on a Friday or Saturday night the problems will continue.

“Pubs and clubs who report incidents to the police do their job well and should be recognised for it - I am sure no proprietor wants their bar associated with violence. Tackling this problem requires police and licensed premises working together - it also means taking action over Scotland’s relationship with alcohol

“I do not want police in this city having to spend their time mopping up the violence and disorder that comes from alcohol, but keeping our streets and communities safe.

“These figures show that tackling Scotland’s relationship with the bottle is not just a matter of improving our health, it is about improving our safety and letting our police do the job we all want them to do to keep us safe.”
