OPPOSITION BUDGET CLAIMS UNBELIEVABLE HYPOCRISY.

OPPOSITION BUDGET CLAIMS UNBELIEVABLE HYPOCRISY.

Commenting on Scottish Labour and Tory reaction to the impact of Westminster budget cuts on Scotland SNP Finance Committee member Joe FitzPatrick highlighted opposition party plans to slash Scottish budgets saying:

“This is unbelievable hypocrisy from Labour and the Tories. It is the UK Labour Government’s spending cuts that are responsible for slashing Scotland’s budget by £500 million a year – and the Tories also plan to impose swingeing cuts in Scotland’s budget if they get elected.

“Peter Mandelson has admitted that UK Governments will be cutting budgets for the next ten years and only yesterday Alistair Darling was talking about cutting spending and increasing taxes. Labour and the Tories should both agree with the SNP and dump the multi-billion Trident nuclear missile programme, instead of cutting jobs and services.

“The latest GERS analysis shows Scotland in budget surplus – with a surplus of some £2.3 billion in the past three years. Rather than pay the price for the UK's mismanagement of our economy, the Westminster cuts make it absolutely clear why Scotland needs to gain responsibility for all of own tax and spending with independence.”

More information on this SNP story,

1. In an interview in The Times (5th September 2009) Chancellor Alistair Darling said:
“we will have to decide given what’s happened to the economy how much we
can afford to spend on services and how much we should be devoting to
making sure we recover our fiscal position.

He continued: When you look at the burden of where the deficit reduction
comes from, it is tax, yes, but it is also tighter public spending.” http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/politics/article6822904.ece

2. Lord Mandleson: "Of course, there will be pressures on spending after
2011 and constraints for the next decade.
