LIB DEM LEADER HITS OUT AT 'FOOT DRAGGING' OVER CALMAN.
LIB DEM LEADER HITS OUT AT 'FOOT DRAGGING' OVER CALMAN.
SNP CALL ON LIB DEMS TO JOIN FIGHT FOR TRANSFER OF POWERS,
SNP MSP Alasdair Allan has called on Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Tavish Scott MSP to join the SNP’s campaign to have the parts of Calman Report where parties agree implemented immediately. The call comes after Mr Scott hit out at the Conservative and Labour parties for “dragging their feet” over taking the outcomes of the report forward and expressed fears that their preoccupation with the forthcoming Westminster election would see the report shelved. Commenting, Dr Allan said: “Tavish Scott is absolutely right to take issue with the foot dragging of the Conservatives and Labour but instead of working himself into a lather in the press, he should join the SNP in calling for the immediate implementation of parts of the Calman report where all parties agree. “On the specific Calman Commission recommendations regarding air weapons, drink-drive and speed limits, the running of Scottish Parliament elections, and the prescription of controlled substances, there should be unanimity in favour of them coming within Holyrood’s responsibility and there is an overwhelming public interest in this happening. “No primary legislation, either at Holyrood or Westminster, is needed to transfer these responsibilities – and to quote Sir Kenneth Calman himself, they could be implemented ‘quickly and easily’ without fuss.”
