SNP FIGHT FOR GLASGOW WITH ELECTION CALL

SNP FIGHT FOR GLASGOW WITH ELECTION CALL

“IF LABOUR WON’T GIVE GLASGOW A SAY – THE SNP WILL”

The SNP is fighting for residents of Glasgow North East at Westminster as SNP MPs confirmed they will move the writ to give people in the constituency their say over who should be their new MP when the House of Commons returns in October.

SNP support for residents of Glasgow North East was confirmed as Westminster candidates from across the country joined Nicola Sturgeon, David Kerr, Glasgow East MP John Mason and Glasgow SNP activists for a campaigning activity in the constituency.

In July Labour MPs voted against moves to set a date for the election, which was caused by the resignation of former speaker Michael Martin MP preferring to leave the constituency unrepresented. The constituency has now been without an MP for 113 days.

SNP Chief Whip Stewart Hosie MP today vowed to keep pushing for a date each and every day when parliament returned.

Mr Hosie said:

“Glasgow North East deserves a fresh start. After decades of Labour representation and now over 100 days with no representation people in this constituency deserve the chance to have their say.

“The SNP is on the side of people in Glasgow North East. We believe people have the right to chose who represents them.

“In July Labour voted against setting a date for this by-election. In October they will face that choice again – they can take that step themselves and commit to calling the by-election on the first day back or they can face Parliament and explain why Glasgow is allowed to go unrepresented but Norwich wa allowed to elect a new MP months ago.

“It would be unforgivable if Labour tried to block this by-election again, but if necessary we bring the writ back every day until we win a Parliamentary majority.”

SNP candidate David Kerr added:

“John Mason has demonstrated what a committed MP can do for a constituency.

“In a year, he has dealt with more than one thousand constituency cases, held upwards of 100 constituency surgeries and established a real presence on Shettleston Road with his full-time constituency office.

“This is exactly the kind of representation and support the people of Glasgow North East deserve. Instead of letting voters make that fresh choice, Labour has put politics before people at a crucial time for residents of the constituency.

“While Labour run and hide, it is the SNP who will stand up and speak up for Glasgow North East.”
