MSP WELCOMES MOVES TO PROTECT STORNOWAY BLACK PUDDING
MSP WELCOMES MOVES TO PROTECT STORNOWAY BLACK PUDDING
Western Isles SNP MSP, Alasdair Allan, has today welcomed new moves by the Scottish Government to help protect the identity of iconic Scottish produce, including Stornoway's Black Pudding or Marag Dubh, against imitations.
Action was announced today by Environment Secretary, Richard Lochhead, to help extend the list of Scottish foods enjoying Protected Food Name (PFN) status by bringing together producers currently registered as PFNs with those hoping to secure that status in the future.
Commenting Dr Allan said:
“This is welcome news for Marag and for all those who produce it in my constituency. The Scottish Government is clearly willing to assist any local producer who wishes to seek protection for the brand at a European level.
“Increasingly one of the Hebrides selling points is its range of food and drinks and today’s announcement shows the Government recognises the importance of this.”
