CALMAN DELAY IS NEEDLESS POLITICAL TIMEWASTING

LABOUR LACK CONVICTION ON CALMAN REFORMS

Labour’s proposals – due in the Queen’s speech - to delay implementation of the Calman Commission recommendations until after the General Election have been condemned as needless time wasting by the SNP.

The transfer of powers in areas where all parties and the Scottish Government agree – power over firearms, speed limits, drink driving and running Scottish elections could go ahead immediately along with borrowing powers for the Scottish Parliament. Instead Labour is postponing any changes until after the General Election.

In contrast the SNP has prepared the legislation required in the Scottish Parliament for the transfer of powers.

SNP MSP Dr Alasdair Allan said:

“This is needless time-wasting by Labour and their unionist allies. Instead of talking about transferring powers the UK Government should get on and do it.

“It is clear from this delay that Labour has no intention of increasing powers to the Parliament and is simply playing politics with the Calman Commission.

“Essential legislation – on air weapons, drink driving, the speed limit and the introduction of borrowing powers that could help Scotland build a sustainable economic future is being pushed back for Labour’s political purposes

“These powers – powers that could save lives - could be implemented tomorrow. The Scottish Government is ready to pass the legislation immediately – why are Labour waiting?

“Even Sir Kenneth Calman acknowledged that elements of the report can be implemented quickly and easily.

“With David Cameron making clear he has no plans for reform for at least another Parliamentary term and Labour pushing Calman into the long grass it is clear that the SNP is the only party committed to a better future for Scotland.”
