IAIN GRAY UNDER PRESSURE TO SUPPORT VOTES AT 16

IAIN GRAY UNDER PRESSURE TO SUPPORT VOTES AT 16.

TWO FACES OF LABOUR WELL ARE TRUELY UNMASKED.

The youth wing of the SNP, Young Scots for Independence, has today seized
on comments made by Gordon Brown during Prime Minister's Questions, in
which he signals his support of lowering the voting age to 16.

This is in direct contradiction to the stance taken by the Labour Party in
Scotland, who have expressed opposition to such a move.

Speaking on the Prime Minister’s comments, 16-year-old Euan Purchase said:

"This further shows the division between Labour in Scotland and London
Labour, they have been caught making contradictory statements yet again.
At Westminster they support the democratic right of young people to a vote
on their future, but in Holyrood they can think of nothing worse.

"Labour's two-faced approach to enfranchising young adults has well and
truly been unmasked. Scottish Labour’s attitude toward lowering the voting
age stinks of shameless oppositionism – something which has became their
trademark.

“The only consistency between London Labour and Labour in Scotland is that
they both refuse the people of Scotland their democratic right, by not
giving them their say on the constitutional future of the country.

“At 16 you pay tax; can serve in the armed offices; start university and
even get married - it is nothing short of ridiculous that you can do all
this and yet still cannot contribute to having their say in the democratic
process.

"The SNP are the only party in Scotland concerned about our democracy, and
concerned about young people. We want Scotland to have the opportunity to
vote in a referendum on our future, and we want young people to be a part
of that process."
