TOWN CENTRE FUND SUPPORTING 1,000 SCOTTISH JOBS

TOWN CENTRE FUND SUPPORTING 1,000 SCOTTISH JOBS

SNP PUT TOWNS AND HIGH STREETS AT HEART OF SCOTTISH RECOVERY

An announcement of £20 million of support for Scottish towns will support Scottish jobs and help boost local economies during the recession after an announcement by the SNP Housing and Communities Minister Alex Neil which will deliver support for investment in 41 towns across Scotland

It is the second tranche of funding from the Scottish Government’s £60 million Town Centre Regeneration Fund which allocated £40 million earlier this year to help transform the town centre high streets and create jobs. Overall, the Fund is supporting nearly 1,000 jobs in Scotland.

All 32 local authority areas in Scotland are benefiting from the Town Centre Regeneration Fund.

Kilmarnock and Loudoun MSP Willie Coffey welcomed over £1 million investment for East Ayrshire Council to improve the approach to the town centre from the rail station.

Mr Coffey said:

“This is tremendous news for Kilmarnock and will help create a more attractive town centre for local residents and visitors. It shows that the SNP Government is keen to help Kilmarnock when it needs help the most.

“With this coming on top of last month’s announcement that hundreds of council workers are to relocate to the town centre, we can see a start to rebuilding the centre as a place to work, shop, and visit.

“The new half-hour rail service to Glasgow provides an opportunity to attract new visitors to the town, but first impressions are vital. This funding will help the town deliver that right first impression.”

Brian Adam, MSP for Aberdeen North welcomed the announcement that Aberdeen is set to receive £1,258,531 to be spent on improvements in Mastrick, Peterculter, Cults, Rosemount and a further award of £572,500 will go to helping business in Torry.
Mr Adam said:
“I am delighted that the Scottish Government has awarded over £1.25 million to make improvements in Aberdeen.
“The support for retail centres in the city communities such as Mastrick in my constituency is very welcome.
“The recession has hit all areas of the economy and the enhancements are well timed to make these centres accessible and more attractive areas to visit as well as shop.
“This shows once more that the Scottish Government is delivering for Aberdeen, helping our businesses through this recession and making improvements to our communities."
News that Port Glasgow and Gourock had submitted successful bids was warmly welcomed by Stuart McMillan MSP.
Mr. McMillan said:
“This is great news for the whole of Inverclyde, as well as Port Glasgow and Gourock.
“The Scottish Government recognises the important role town centres play in the community and have introduced this funding to give areas a boost of cash and confidence.

“This will undoubtedly help Port Glasgow and Gourock to develop a thriving local economy which is more able to adapt to modern markets as well as serve the local community.
