UN INTERVENTION DISCOUNTED IN SECRET MEETING

UN INTERVENTION DISCOUNTED IN SECRET MEETING

‘CHILCOT MUST DIG DEEP TO UNCOVER THE TRUTH’

SNP Westminster Leader and Defence Spokesperson Angus Robertson MP has demanded Gordon Brown and Tony Blair appear before the Chilcot Inquiry immediately to explain their actions in the lead up to the war in Iraq.

Mr Robertson made the call after it emerged that UK Government Ministers had seen a report which suggested Iraq would be unable to use chemical weapons. Additionally, the UK's former ambassador to the US, Sir Christopher Meyer, today (Thursday) suggested Tony Blair had discounted a UN intervention in Iraq and agreed to a military campaign in a closed meeting with President Bush.

Commenting, Mr Robertson said:

“The UK Government’s already discredited case for going to war has been totally shattered by revelations that Ministers knew the so called weapons of mass destruction were useless.

“Tony Blair went to war in our name – but it now emerges he was dissuaded from pursuing UN action in a secret meeting with George Bush and Paul Wolfowitz.

“With every evidence session, the need for Gordon Brown to give evidence becomes all the more pressing. As Chancellor at the time, did he sign cheques but ask no questions?

“Sir John Chilcot will have to dig deep to uncover the truth about the decisions which led to the biggest foreign policy disaster in modern times.”
