ONE YEAR ON FROM SMEARGATE AND LABOUR HAVE LEARNT NOTHING
TWITTER DEBACLE SHOWS WHERE POWER LIES IN LABOUR PARTY
SNP Westminster Leader Angus Robertson said today (Saturday) that this
week’s Twitter debacle showed where the power really lay within the
Scottish Labour party.
The foul rants of the party’s Moray candidate Stuart MacLennan were
revealed by a national newspaper yesterday. He was initially backed by
Labour’s top brass in Scotland, Jim Murphy and Iain Gray, who said he
would not have to resign. Just hours later, they were overruled from London.
Stuart MacLennan’s nasty comments also come a year to the day that Gordon
Brown’s senior special advisor Damian McBride was revealed as the author
of a series of emails suggesting a hateful campaign of smears against
political opponents. Just as reports have raised questions about senior
Labour politicians who followed Stuart MacLennan's Twitter the Damian
McBride incident also begged questions of how many senior people knew
about his behaviour.
Commenting, Mr Robertson said:
“This debacle shows exactly who pulls the strings in Scottish Labour –
their London bosses.
“Jim Murphy wanted to gloss over Stuart MacLennan’s foul mouthed rants but
Gordon Brown overruled him between interviews.
“No doubt Murphy – along with several other Members of the UK Parliament –
wanted to downplay the significance of this. As followers of Stuart
MacLennan on Twitter, they knew exactly what he had been saying for
months.
“Labour have learnt nothing from Smeargate. Once again, senior Cabinet
Ministers have been implicated in an online scandal."
Smeargate broke on April 11th 2009. For more details see:
