TORIES EXPOSED ON REFERENDUM PLEDGE

TORIES EXPOSED ON REFERENDUM PLEDGE

75% WANT REFERENDUM – BUT TORIES STAND IN THE WAY

The SNP challenged the Tories over their commitment to referendums after
their manifesto failed to support a referendum on Scotland’s
constitutional future despite offering referenda on any issue supported by
5% of a local population.

Their manifesto states “we will give residents the power to instigate
local referendums on any local issue if 5 per cent of the local population
sign up.”

The most recent polls show 75% of people in Scotland want a referendum on
Scotland’s future.

SNP Depute Leader Nicola Sturgeon MSP said:

“London parties are tying themselves in knots to offer referendums on
anything and everything - except to people in Scotland.

“Far more than 5% of Scots back a referendum on Scotland’s future – in
fact three quarters of Scots back a referendum on Scotland’s future yet
the UK parties are determined to deny them that right.

“The people of Scotland are clear that they want to have their voices
heard on Scotland’s future – just as they will be heard in this election –
yet once again the Tories are simply cutting Scotland out of the picture.

“The Tories refusal to allow Scotland’s people a fair opportunity to vote
on a better future for their country shows up their empty rhetoric for
what it is.

“The truth is that it is only the SNP that is firmly committed to giving
the people of Scotland a say over their future and it is only SNP MPs and
MSPs who will champion that democratic voice at any opportunity. We want
to see the people making the big decisions over Scotland’s future.”
