SMALLER CLASS SIZES ACROSS SCOTLAND SUCCESS FOR SNP GOVERNMENT.

SMALLER CLASS SIZES ACROSS SCOTLAND SUCCESS FOR SNP GOVERNMENT.

WEST LOTHIAN PROGRESS SHOWS COMMITMENT CAN BE MET.

Figures on class sizes released today show councils can make real progress to reduce class sizes in P1-P3 to 18.

SNP MSP for Livingston Angela Constance today highlighted the significant progress made in West Lothian as evidence that councils can meet the targets.

West Lothian has increased the number of P1-P3 children in class sizes of 18 from 10% in 2007 to 24% in 2008%.

Across Scotland the number of P1-P3 pupils in classes of over 25 has fallen from 38 per cent in 2006 to 23 per cent in 2008

Ms Constance said;

“West Lothian has made a major step forward with a 140% increase in the numbers of P1-3 children in class sizes of 18 or less and is an example of what can be achieved by local councils.

“With 7 local authorities having an average P1 size of under 18 progress is being made with two more years to go.

“While it is disappointing that the previous Executive’s target of 25 was not met during their term the fall in the numbers of P1-P3 pupils in class sizes over 25 shows councils are now taking this issue seriously.

“The SNP Government has provided the funds – it is now for local authorities – as West Lothian has done – to make the difference and cut the class sizes.
