SNP SECURES WESTMINSTER LABOUR LAW INQUIRY.

EUROPEAN SCRUTINY COMMITTEE SET TO ACT
A powerful House of Commons committee has agreed to look into European labour legislation in the wake of industrial action around the UK.
The European Scrutiny Committee agreed today (Wednesday) to a proposal by Westminster SNP leader Angus Roberson MP that this issue was an immediate area of concern.
Ministers and experts will now be invited to give evidence to the committee about European legislation, rulings by the European Court of Justice and plans for future policy changes by the European Commission.
Speaking after the decision by the European Scrutiny Committee Angus Robertson MP said:

"The industrial action and growing concerns about job discrimination at a time of recession make these inquiries essential.

"Free movement of labour has been an overwhelming success and, in my opinion, must continue. Thousands of jobs depend on this EU benefit remaining. An area of particular relevance would be the impact of any employment changes to UK nationals who currently work in other countries, especially in the offshore oil and gas industry.

"There are of course ongoing and serious questions about the working of European legislation and specifically how it operates in the UK.
"The European Scrutiny Committee of the House of Commons has a powerful oversight role, and I am pleased that this is being taken seriously.”
