CANAVAN REFERENDUM CALL WELCOMED.

CANAVAN REFERENDUM CALL WELCOMED.

OPPOSITION SHOULD LEARN FROM CANAVAN CONTRIBUTION

Dennis Canavan’s comments to the Calman Commission have been welcomed by SNP MSP Alasdair Allan who has said they should serve as a lesson to the Lib Dems who have today suggested they will try to deny the people of Scotland a referendum on their constitutional future.

Former Labour MP and Independent MSP Mr Canavan has warned the Calman Commission that it must “accept the right of the people of Scotland to determine their destiny” if it is to have any credibility.

Western Isles MSP Alasdair Allan said;

“Dennis Canavan’s contribution is welcome. He has called the Calman Commission and the opposition parties – including the Lib Dems - out on their fatal flaw.

“No matter what else they put in their final report excluding independence and failing to recommend a role for the people of Scotland in choosing their constitutional future will cast doubt on the Commission’s credibility.

“Tavish Scott has asked for an end to the speculation over Scotland’s future – he can end that speculation by passing the referendum bill and putting the question to the Scottish people in 2010.

“The Lib Dems, the Calman Commission and the other unionist parties should learn a lesson from Mr Canavan’s contribution and accept the right of the people of Scotland to determine their own destiny.”
