WELCOME FOR EDINBURGH RECTORIAL ELECTION RESULT.
'ANOTHER DRUBBING FOR LABOUR IN SCOTLAND'
Lothians SNP MSP Shirley-Anne Somerville has welcomed the result of
the Edinburgh rectorial elections which saw journalist Iain Macwhirter
win 69% of the vote against Labour MSP Lord George Foulkes.
A significant plank of Iain Macwhirter's campaign was opposition to
Labour's plans for ID cards.
Commenting Shirley-Anne said:
"I welcome the election of Iain Macwhirter as rector of Edinburgh
University. He is a journalist held in high regard across the
political spectrum and I am convinced that he will be a hard working
rector for the students of Edinburgh University.
"It is significant that a major plank of his campaign was opposition
to the Labour Government's plans for I'd cards. This result just shows
how out of touch Labour has become with opinion in Scotland.
"It is another drubbing for Labour in Scotland. Students obviously
don't like what Labour has to say as well as what they do. Labour's
negative politics have been rejected once again."
Mathew Lawson, President of the Edinburgh University Student
Nationalsts Association (EUSNA), said:
"EUSNA are pleased that the best candidate won. Iain Macwhirter had
the best policies for Edinburgh students and will do the best to take
us forward.
"In contrast the Foulkes campaign was full of negativity and narrow
minded politics..
"EUSNA looks forward to working with the new rector and believes he
can deliver positive change for every student in Edinburgh."
