SNP MSP Angela Constance has welcomed the Office of Fair Trading recommendation that property owners should be enabled to take a test case against land maintenance companies.
Livingston MSP Angela Constance has campaigned alongside constituents who found themselves unable to change from land maintenance supplier Greenbelt – no matter how poor the service as a result of the legal arrangements put in place.
Ms Constance has previously raised the issue with Scottish Government Ministers.
Commenting on the OFT’s recommendations Ms Constance said;
“This report has many valuable recommendations in it that could improve the quality and responsiveness both of factors and land maintenance companies.
“The absence of competition in both areas is concerning for all homeowners.
“A test case against land maintenance companies who prevent or hinder consumers who try to change supplier is something that is long overdue.
“Too often home owners have found themselves tied into contracts that they cannot get out of – no matter how bad the service they receive.
“Homeowners who have tried to extricate themselves from these contracts have found themselves blocked at every turn.
“A test case and support for a change in the legislation if needed will be a huge step forward for those who remain tied into deeply unsatisfactory contracts.”
