FOREIGN OFFICE ASSURANCES NOT ENOUGH ON GUANTANAMO TORTURE CLAIMS.

FOREIGN OFFICE ASSURANCES NOT ENOUGH ON GUANTANAMO TORTURE CLAIMS.

The SNP has called on the UK Government to publish any evidence it holds on whether UK citizens held in Guantanamo Bay were subject to torture. SNP calls follow a statement by the Foreign Secretary in the House of Commons after the High Court alleged that Binyam Mohamed, a UK resident held in the Guantanamo Bay camp in Cuba, had been tortured. Mr Miliband told the Commons that the UK Government would “never condone” torture, but that it was not willing to publish any intelligence documents against the wishes of US authorities. SNP Westminster leader and Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Angus Robertson MP, said: "David Miliband’s statement raises more questions than it answers. It is just not credible for the UK Government to veto the publication of details of Binyam Mohamed’s treatment by US agencies. "The implication that a UK citizen has been tortured, that our courts have been threatened, and that the UK Government has been complicit, warrant a full and immediate investigation.” Also commenting, Jamie Hepburn MSP, who is convener of the Scottish Parliament’s Cross Party Group on Human Rights and Civil Liberties, said: “Mr Miliband may not condone torture – but we need to know if the UK Government has been involved in covering up torture. “These allegations are extremely serious, and must be fully investigated. “The UK Government must come clean and publish what it knows about the treatment of its citizens held in Guantanamo Bay. “Anyone involved in acts of torture in Guantanamo Bay must be brought to justice. The breaches of human rights alleged to have taken place at the prison camp, and in getting people there by illegal rendition flights, make a mockery of the security and liberty that US and UK foreign policy was supposed to defend.”
