KERR SEEKS ASSURANCES ON GLASGOW INSURANCE JOBS
KERR SEEKS ASSURANCES ON GLASGOW INSURANCE JOBS
The SNP has today sought assurances over the future of around 1600 jobs in
Glasgow after reports RBS will be forced to sell it's Glasgow based
insurance division.
SNP Candidate in the Glasgow North East by-election David Kerr today said
he would seek assurances from UKFI and the Treasury that maintaining
employment in the city would not be sacrificed in their rush to force a
sale.
Mr Kerr said:
"I will be writing to the Chancellor and UKFI for assurances that jobs
will not be put at risk by their plan to force RBS to sell its Glasgow
based insurance division.
"If RBS's insurance brands are sold to an existing insurer then jobs in
Glasgow will be at risk. Instead we must look at a new firm coming in or
a management buy out - steps that will maintain jobs and enhance
competition.
"Unemployment in Glasgow North East is currently higher than it was under
the Tories. At the moment it sounds like the Chancellor is more interested
in a good price than good jobs.
"There have already been job losses as a result of the banking collapse -
many of them in Scotland. We cannot allow jobs in this city to be
sacrificed by this proposal."
