BROWN MUST APPEAR BEFORE CHILCOT AGAIN

BROWN MUST APPEAR BEFORE CHILCOT AGAIN

IRAQ WAR INQUIRY SHOWS PEOPLE CAN'T TRUST A WORD LABOUR SAYS

SNP Westminster Leader and Defence Spokesperson, Angus Robertson MP, has called on Prime Minister Gordon Brown to appear before the Chilcot Inquiry again after yesterday's revelations that Gordon Brown had misled the official Chilcot inquiry into the Iraq war by saying the defence budget had risen in real terms every year under Labour. This was not true.

Commenting, Mr Robertson said:

“This was a devastating admission from Gordon Brown and utterly damaging to his and Labour's credibility.

"The whole Iraq war - from the lead up, to the war itself and now to the inquiry - shows that no one can trust a word Labour says.

"It begs the question of what else may have been said that was misleading? Gordon Brown should return to the inquiry so his claims on defence spending can be re-examined by the panel.

"While he may have downplayed his role before the Iraq Inquiry, the fact still remains, Gordon Brown was the Chancellor who signed the checks that funded this illegal war.

“Sir John Chilcot will have to dig deep to uncover the truth about the decisions which led to the biggest foreign policy disaster in modern times, but his job is made almost impossible if key witnesses such as Gordon Brown are selective in their evidence.

“The Prime Minister must appear again - and hold nothing back this time.

“For all of those who opposed the Iraq invasion and for the thousands who lost their lives to it, the real reasons behind this illegal and immoral war must be known.”
