NUCLEAR WEAPONS 'TOTALLY INDEFENSIBLE

SNP RESPOND TO PM'S TRIDENT COMMENTS

In response to Prime Minister Gordon Brown's comments on the future of the
Trident nuclear missile system, SNP Westminster Leader and Defence
Spokesman Angus Robertson MP said:

"If Gordon Brown really wanted to save on nuclear missiles, he should
scrap the replacement of Trident altogether. It is massively hypocritical
to pretend you're leading a multilateral effort to disarm while ordering
up more weapons of mass destruction.

"At a time when Westminster is imposing a massive £814m cut on the
Scottish Government's budget, to waste £100bn weapons of mass destruction
is indefensible and obscene.

"Anyway you look at it - on moral, financial or defence grounds - renewal
of Trident is completely untenable.

"There is massive opposition to dumping a new generation of nuclear
weapons in Scotland but only SNP MPs will champion Scotland's frontline
services above these abhorrent weapons of mass destruction at
Westminster."
