SNP MSP ADDRESSES RALLY IN SUPPORT OF ASYLUM SEEKERS
SNP MSP ADDRESSES RALLY IN SUPPORT OF ASYLUM SEEKERS
SNP MSP Anne McLaughlin, today (Saturday) addressed a rally of 500 hundred
local people, community activists, asylum seekers, MSPs and councillors
who had gathered in Glasgow to express their concern following the
apparent suicide of three asylum seekers who were living in the Red Road
flats.
Ms McLaughlin has written to the Lord Advocate requesting an official
hearing into the case of the family, who were found at the bottom of their
31-storey building in Glasgow on Sunday.
Commenting after the rally, Ms McLaughlin said:
"Local residents have been left extremely distressed by last week’s
events. We absolutely must have a systematic inquiry into what led to
these tragic deaths to ensure there are no failings in the system which
can be remedied to prevent it happening again.
"The great turn out today shows the goodwill felt in Glasgow for asylum
seekers – one of the most vulnerable groups in our society."
