LEADING LIBDEM POLITICIANS CAUGHT OUT MISLEADING ON FUEL TAX

LEADING LIBDEM POLITICIANS CAUGHT OUT MISLEADING ON FUEL TAX

ONLY SNP MPs WILL CHAMPION STABLE FUEL PRICES FOR THE HIGHLANDS

Commenting on the performance of Nick Clegg’s chief-of-staff, Danny Alexander, on the Politics Show today (Sunday) where he directly contradicted his party leader who supported higher fuel taxes SNP Treasury Spokesman Stewart Hosie MP said it just exposed to the people of the Highlands how the LibDems were just typical politicians who couldn’t be trusted on the important issue of fuel taxes.

Mr Hosie said:

“This episode just shows that the LibDems cannot be trusted on the highly important issue of fuel taxes. Nick Clegg is the party leader and ruled out a cut saying it should stay in the budget. As Nick Clegg’s chief-of-staff and election co-ordinator Danny Alexander must know that was the position. I would be astonished if he didn’t. He must have thought he could get away with saying something different in Scotland.

“However he has been caught out for all to see and now any claims by the LibDems in the Highlands & Islands of being the party of lower fuel costs have been blown out the water. This is devastating for any re-election chances he may have had.

“The fact is that the LibDems support increasing fuel taxes as their own policy documents show. Do they think the people of the Highlands & Islands are stupid and won’t notice? They are exposed as acting like typical London politicians.

“The only party with a clear and consistent record against sky high fuel prices in the Highlands & Islands is the SNP, and only the SNP is offering the people of Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey a real local champion in John Finnie to stand up against London’s fuel tax whammy.”

SNP Westminster Candidate for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey Cllr John Finnie said:

"While the LibDems join the London parties in a phoney war, it is the SNP which champion causes which matter to the people of the Highlands. That's why I support lower fuel taxes and a fuel duty regulator to stop volatile fuel prices.

"The Liberal Democrats failed to support that measure when the SNP brought forward legislation to introduce a fuel duty regulator.

“I know the impact rising fuel prices are having in this constituency and across the country. Driving down prices is essential to the Highlands, to the Highland economy and to families in the Highlands."
