SNP CONFERENCE – “WE’VE GOT WHAT IT TAKES TO SPEAK UP FOR SCOTLAND”

SNP CONFERENCE – “WE’VE GOT WHAT IT TAKES TO SPEAK UP FOR SCOTLAND”

SNP Conference will open today (Thursday 15th October) at Eden Court in
Inverness.

The conference gathering in Inverness comes as the party has passed the
mid-point of the Scottish Parliament term – and is leading in the polls
for both Holyrood and Westminster elections - and looking forward to the
Glasgow North East by-election, the Westminster election and the
publication of a referendum Bill in the Scottish Parliament to deliver on
the SNP’s commitment to hold an independence referendum in 2010.

Conference will move toward the next Westminster General Election and our
goal of winning a block of 20 MPs, demonstrating that we’ve got what it
takes to speak up for Scotland.

Over the coming days Conference will focus on showing that we’ve got what
it takes to drive recovery and to get Scotland working. That our
priorities are the Scottish people’s priorities and that we will continue
to drive Scotland forward with investment in jobs, recovery and education.

Speaking ahead of the opening of conference, SNP MP Westminster Leader and
Business Convener of the SNP Angus Robertson said:

“In the five years since conference has met in Inverness the SNP have
shown we’ve got what it takes to speak up for Scotland.

“With success in the 2007 elections seeing the SNP form the Government in
Edinburgh and council administrations across Scotland – and winning the
European elections this year – we have demonstrated to the people of
Scotland that the SNP are the only party who put their priorities first
and who can give Scotland a voice.

“Over Climate Change, economic recovery and the future of Scotland as an
independent nation, only the SNP is giving Scotland a voice. It is only
the SNP speaking up for Scottish priorities against the UK parties plans
to waste billions on Trident nuclear weapons instead of public services.

“Now as we look forward to a Westminster by-election in Glasgow and the
General Election, we have shown that when faced with tough decisions we
will be guided by Scottish values. The Scottish Government’s budget is
protecting jobs, supporting recovery, and investing in frontline services
in health, education and justice in the face of funding cuts from London.

“In the last year, Scotland has seen that both Labour and the Tories plan
to slash Scottish spending. The SNP is the only party that’s got what it
takes to speak up for Scotland and fight for our nation’s interests.”
