SNP MSP JOINS COUNCIL OF INTERNATIONAL PARLIAMENTARIANS AGAINST NUCLEAR WEAPONS

SNP MSP JOINS COUNCIL OF INTERNATIONAL PARLIAMENTARIANS AGAINST NUCLEAR
WEAPONS

The SNP are delighted to announce that Glasgow SNP MSP Bill Kidd has
accepted membership of the Council of the Parliamentarians for Nuclear
Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (PNND) – a network dedicated helping
parliamentarians become engaged in nuclear non-proliferation and
disarmament initiatives.

Mr Kidd will be the first Scottish parliamentarian to be appointed to the
worldwide body which includes elected legislators from across the world.

He will formally take up his duties this weekend as he flies to New York
to attend the PNND Assembly and Council Meeting which will take place
between the 11th and 13th of October.

On Monday the 12th, Mr Kidd will also deliver a speech to the PNND Assembly.

Commenting on his appointment Mr Kidd said:

"I am both delighted and honoured to be invited to become a Member of the
PNND Council and have happily accepted the invitation to attend the PNND
Assembly this weekend.

"It is a great honour to be the first Scottish parliamentarian to be
appointed to this influential organisation. I also believe my appointment
is a recognition of the growing interational status Scotland’s Parliament
holds on this issue.

"The 2007 Scottish Parliamentary vote against replacing Trident and the
Scottish Government’s position against these weapons of mass destruction
has been noticed world wide and I believe they have both helped in my
appointment.

"Trident is dangerous, unnecessary and expensive, and today's recession
shows how it is a financial distraction when people want that money spent
on frontline public services.

"I look forward to clearly putting forward Scotland’s position to the PNND
Assembly and my own continuing commitment to the cause of nuclear
non-proliferation and disarmament."
